Investigative Process

Archaeological Investigations at the S & F Brick Company were conducted in 1990 and 2002 under provisions of Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act (as amended). Archaeological investigations under Section 106 typically follow a sequence of investigative steps:

  • Phase I Identification Survey aims to determine presence/absence of archaeological deposits and delineate their spatial distribution.

  • Phase II Evaluation aims to determine the integrity and significance of discovered archaeological resources.

  • Phase III is undertaken if the discovered archaeological sites are determined to be significant and cannot be avoided by a development; Phase III is a data recovery that is carried out before a site is destroyed.
