The Power Station

The central power station built by the S & F Company

The Reading Room

The S & F Company reading room served as an advertising tool for the company's products and as a recreation facility for company employees. At the time of its construction in 1883, a large proportion of the residents of the town of Sayreville were employees. The company and the township were intricately linked. The first floor was used as a quasi-gymnasium and the second floor was used for meetings of fraternal orders and other social purposes. It was constructed of pressed and common brick with some terra cotta. The façade was made of polychrome brick and terra cotta, string courses, arched window heads, door and window surrounds, and an impressive panel that reads "Reading Room, Sayreville Hall, 1883" (Guter, 1979).
