Bulkhead

This investigation identified a 19th to early 20th century bulkhead along the shore of the Raritan River. The bulkhead consisted of squared horizontal timbers, with vertical pilings on the water side and additional timbers at set intervals on the land side, which were perpendicular to the horizontal timbers. These perpendicular timbers were weighed down by the fill above them to keep the bulkhead in place. In one of the docking areas, the horizontal bulkhead was placed directly above the wooden pilings. This construction technique was used during the late 19th and 20th centuries. A section of a shoreline bulkhead at S & F brickworks is depicted on an 1895 photograph (LBA, 1990: IX-2-IX-3).
