The majority of the S & F executives started out as general store clerks who demonstrated their abilities, moved up the ranks, and assumed responsibilities connected to the brick plant. The notable S & F executives included DeWitt Blew, George Blew, Frederick Townley, Charles Gildersleeve, John Junker, E.F. Lockhart, Fred Davis, Walter Riddle, William Riddle, etc. (Karcher, 1953: 5). In accordance with the company's paternalistic policy, managers were provided with living accommodations according to their status. These S & F Managers' Houses were executed in vernacular-style with cruciform double-house plan, gold - colored front brick façade, and common brick side-walls (Guter, 1979). These structures are on Main Street in Sayreville, New Jersey.
